Host-related factors include sex, age, and lung and metabolic diseases. A more unknown aspect is the interrelationship between nutritional status and health at not only the individual, but also the community and global levels. Several factors contribute to nutritional status, including economic stability; medical comorbidities; racism or other discrimination; and food insecurity, as determined by unequal access to essential nutrients or healthy food. The histopathology of the nodule obtained during bronchoscopy revealed expansion of the submucosal stroma, mostly of amorphous eosinophilic material, which was positive for Congo red staining, showing apple-green birefringence when exposed to polarized light. Systemic amyloidosis was biochemically and radiologically ruled out. Given the absence of symptoms, we agreed with the patient to conduct a “watch-and-wait” follow-up.</p><elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0005"></elsevierMultimedia><p id="par0010" class="elsevierStylePara elsevierViewall">Amyloidosis is an idiopathic disease characterized by the extracellular accumulation of insoluble fibrillar proteins (amyloid) in organs and tissues. Amyloidosis can present as a systemic disease (associated with high morbidity and mortality) or occur in certain organs (mainly the kidneys, heart and liver). Tracheal amyloidosis is very uncommon, and its therapeutic objective consists of maintaining adequate tracheal patency with hydrostatic balloon dilation, endoscopic excision or open surgery.
